Although Old Stone Fort might not sit upon a mountain, it is situated on the Highland Rim. This is a geographic term for the elevated area that surrounds the Central Basin encompassing middle Tennessee and Nashville. The Highland Rim is defined by dramatic escarpments and rock shelters. These escarpments are most likely a factor of why the Middle Woodland peoples chose to build the Old Stone Fort where it sits today.
