In Sewanee, Woody's Bicyles has long been the place where locals and visitors go to get rolling. What began as a small satellite shop in the mid-90s has grown into one of Sewanee's most loved fixtures, offering full-service bike repairs, rentals, and new and used bikes for sale.
After nearly 29 years at the helm, founder Woody Deutsch handed over the handlebars in 2024. Robert McKee, a lifelong cyclist who grew up riding these very roads and trails, is now leading the shop into its next chapter. As quoted in The Sewanee Mountain Messenger, McKee said, “Everything at Woody’s Bicycles will remain the same, right down to the exceptional customer service that is the hallmark of the business.”

Woody’s offers both standard bike rentals and e-bikes, giving riders a flexible way to explore the mountain terrain. E-bikes are especially popular for those wanting to ride longer distances or tackle hills with ease, while traditional bikes are perfect for a leisurely cruise through town or along the trail. Sewanee is full of great mountain biking options, including forested trails and gravel routes that appeal to both casual riders and seasoned cyclists. With wide open spaces, minimal traffic, and scenic views at every turn, it's a rider’s dream.
The Mountain Goat Trail is just a short ride from the shop. This paved, multi-use path runs along the old Mountain Goat Railroad bed and stretches about five miles between Sewanee and Monteagle. Thanks to the work of the Mountain Goat Trail Alliance, the trail continues to grow, with hopes of becoming a much longer route through South Central Tennessee.
Sewanee has always been a destination worth exploring. It’s home to the University of the South, which has been called the most beautiful college campus in the country. It’s also quietly become a great food destination, with unexpected dining spots tucked between galleries, coffee shops, and historic buildings. Don’t miss The Cross, a breathtaking overlook perched above the Cumberland Plateau, offering one of the best views in the state. And the best way to take it all in? On two wheels.
Woody’s Bicycles is a great starting point for experiencing Sewanee. Rent a bike, ride the trail, and take in all this mountain town has to offer, one pedal at a time!
