Updated: Sep 13

Calling all cavefolk, concert-goers, nature lovers, and outdoor explorers! If you're visiting The Caverns in Pelham, TN, and have a free day to immerse yourself in the surrounding beauty, this nature-centric itinerary is your perfect match. Expect sweeping overlooks, peaceful hikes, historic charm, and delicious food, all just a short drive from your underground adventure.

Start with the Outdoors: Waterfalls, Stone Arches & Scenic Trails

Ease into the day with fresh air and forest views. These short hikes are perfect for a relaxed morning adventure:

  • Natural Bridge State Natural Area

Take a peaceful walk through the woods to discover a stunning natural stone bridge hidden beneath the trees. It’s a short trail but a magical sight.

  • Morgans Falls (or) Bridal Veil Falls

Looking for a waterfall hike? Both trails offer forested paths and rewarding views of cascading water. Bridal Veil has a unique split waterfall and a shallow cave behind it, while Morgan’s Falls is quieter and less traveled.

Optional Adventure: Mountain Goat Trail

If you’d rather bike than hike (or want to do both!), check out the Mountain Goat Trail.

  • Start by renting a bike at Woody’s Bicycles in Sewanee

They offer both standard and e-bikes, and their staff is full of helpful local advice.

  • Cruise the Mountain Goat Trail

This paved trail follows an old railroad bed and winds through the mountain towns of Sewanee and Monteagle. It’s scenic, peaceful, and a great way to experience the area at your own pace.

Midday Refuel: Coffee + Quick Bites

After a morning of adventure, it’s time to treat yourself.

  • Stirling’s Coffee House

Tucked into a yellow cottage on the Sewanee campus, Stirling’s is a student-loved spot for coffee, smoothies, and light bites. Sit on the porch and relax awhile.

  • Pick up a treat from Dutch Maid Bakery

Just a short drive away, this is Tennessee’s oldest family-owned bakery. Whether you crave homemade pastries or their famous breads, this spot is a must for sweet-lovers and history buffs alike.

Afternoon: Overlooks & Local Landmarks

  • "The Cross" Overlook

Take in panoramic views of the valley below. It’s a quiet, reverent space that captures the grandeur of the Cumberland Plateau.

  • Walk through The University of the South

A hidden gem! This historic university campus feels like something out of a storybook. Meander among stone buildings, shaded pathways, and soaring gothic architecture.

Dinner Options: Local Flavor

Depending on your mood and timing, you’ve got great choices:

  • Mountain Goat Market

Eclectic, quick, and incredibly tasty. This local favorite has a funky interior and offers sandwiches, pizzas, salads, and plenty of drink options.

  • High Point Restaurant (reservations required)

Housed in a historic stone mansion with an upscale, old-world vibe, High Point is ideal for a special dinner. Enjoy classic Southern cuisine with white-tablecloth service. Reservations are required, so plan ahead if you want to dine here.

If you're heading to a concert at The Caverns, now it’s time to head back to Pelham and prepare for the magical underground show!
