Bennett's Pharmacy is home to one of Tennessee's most beloved Soda Fountains

In a world where big box stores and national chains seem to be taking over, Bennett’s Pharmacy in Winchester, Tennessee is an inspiring family-owned exception. Founded in 1958 by Loel Bennett, this authentic, old-fashioned drugstore is worth a visit, whether you need a prescription filled or not.

The iconic business is beloved by all in Franklin County. Pharmacist and owner Lisa Wallace, granddaughter of Loel, brings a passion for work and her customers, saying “It’s all about helping people in whatever way we can.”  Lisa was so kind to show us around and tell us their history. After Lisa’s grandfather retired, his daughter, Lisa’s mom, took over. Since 2014 Lisa has been carrying on a strong family tradition of serving Franklin County residents with personal attention that only a friend can give.

Open seven days a week, the pharmacy offers delivery, compounding, immunizations, and multi-dose packaging. They are very proud to be the first to participate in the TennCare Diaper Program, which provides children under 2 years-old a one-month supply of diapers. Those interested need only to bring a copy of the child’s insurance card, fill out the necessary form and receive a 30-day supply of diapers, one size per month. It’s a great program.

But wait, there’s more!

Who doesn’t remember the inspiring drugstore soda fountain scene in “It’s A Wonderful Life” where a young Mary leans down and whispers in the deaf ear of the young soda-jerk, “George Bailey, I’ll love you ‘til the day I die.”  Bennett’s soda fountain is very similar to the one in the movie, serving up ice cream, milkshakes, malts and a great breakfast and  lunch.

Sheila, who runs the counter, offers Southern favorites like homemade chicken salad, pimento cheese, BLT’s and more, plus the true star of the soda fountain, the banana split. When you go, be sure to ask for Olivia, The Banana Split QUEEN! She’s earned this title by ensuring a huge, delicious treat. To wash it all down is a specialty drink concoction known as The Bloody Marty. “Everyone used to skip school and come and have a Bloody Marty and then go back,” said Wallace.

While you wait for your prescription or lunch, take a spin around the store to pick-up a few specialty gift items: a new designer handbag, a toy for the kiddos, a collectible. Bennett’s impeccable customer service includes helping guests pick out the perfect item.

Take a minute while you’re browsing to peek into the cabinet of historic drugstore memorabilia from a bygone era, a reminder of the decades of above and beyond  service provided to every person who walks through the door of Bennett’s Pharmacy. No matter what, when you’re in Winchester, visit Bennett’s and enjoy a nostalgic visit to a down home shop that will treat you like family.
