The name George Dickel holds weight in the whisky world, and it all started with a man who believed whisky made in the cold months was a little bit smoother and more refined. George A. Dickel, a Nashville merchant, bought into the whisky business in the late 1800s and quickly built a reputation for producing incredibly mellow spirits. When the Cascade Hollow Distillery opened in 1878, Dickel saw something special and became a key figure in its rise.
That belief in quality lives on today, right down to the name. Unlike most American whiskeys, you'll notice George Dickel drops the "e" in whisky. It's a nod to Scotch-style tradition, and to the idea that American whisky could stand on the same shelf as the world's best.
"Cascade Hollow" isn't just a catchy name, it's an actual place. Once you see it, you'll understand why it's been home to generations of whisky-making. Nestled among rolling hills and natural springs, the distillery uses this setting to create some of the smoothest whisky you'll ever sip. The fresh, clean spring water you see running through the property is still used in the distilling process today.
Tours are available by booking online or in person, and they offer a full deep dive into the distilling process. You'll walk through barrelhouses, see how the whisky is made, learn why this hollow has been used for distilling for over a century, and end it with a sampling of George Dickel whiskies.
Cascade Hollow Distilling Co. is located just outside of Tullahoma, making it an easy addition to any itinerary in the South Central Tennessee region.
